Psychology and Spirituality | Family Conflicts featuring Dr. Anahy Fonseca and Jussara Korngold in a discussion about the conflict between good and evil within ourselves The Psychology and Spirituality weekly talks are based on the works by Joanna de Angelis and offer a safe space to confront, compare, correlate, and expand spirituality concepts from a psychological lens bringing insights, actionable tips, and real-world advice to help you lead a better life. Today Dr. Anahy Fonseca and Jussara Korngold will discuss some aspects of Family Conflicts. As we know, conflicts can happen when family members (1) have different views or belief systems, (2) misunderstand each other and jump to wrong conclusions, or (3) are faced with issues and conflicts not resolved peacefully. In this episode Marcia Trajano invites Dr. Anahy Fonseca and Jussara Korngold to highlight humanity's existential crisis as it is evidenced during conflicts in the familial domain. hello everyone welcome to the psychology and spirituality a bridge to a better life discussion I'm your host Marcia trano and with me are Dr anay fona and jar corn go if this is the first time you're watching this podcast Live program please note that our program the psychology and spirituality weekly talks are based on the works by Joanna d'angeles it offers a safe space to confront compare correlate and expand spiritual Concepts from a psychological lens bringing insights actionable tips and real world advice to help you and I lead a better life today Dr anaon and J corod will discuss some aspects of conf conflict and as you know conflicts happens when we have different views or belief systems when we misunderstand each other when we jump to wrong conclusions or when whatever you call them conflicts issues um suspicions are not resolved peacefully we'll talk about how we all are in immersed in in a sort of existential crisis and how because of it uh conflicts just percolate up but before we start our conversation I would like to recognize the sponsoring Organization Amy Brazil TV manando C the international spir is Council and the United States Spirits Federation I'd love to hear from you please let us know send us your questions your notes your feedback and I'd love to to uh use them or utilize your your ideas for the next time we meet until then make sure you hit subscribe if you haven't already done so so I wanted to to to start here because Jonah d'angeles discusses that U when we want to overcome any issues right especially when they come from external right external in in inward issues and we're only able to do this by and this is very interesting what she says to eliminate this demon the this this whatever is evil that is within so it's an external source of conflict but we need to do this by looking within and what she means by that is that um nothing fear anxiety y worries can reach us when our mental state is one of pure love with love we are able to Shield

ict but we need to do this by looking within and what she means by that is that um nothing fear anxiety y worries can reach us when our mental state is one of pure love with love we are able to Shield ourselves from for example resentment taking over us so today we're we're talking about conflicts and uh how do we feel how can we control it what do we do and because of a interesting series of uh movies it's a in the Maleficent Disney franchise a 2014 uh initial and then five years later malefic and the Mistress of evil in 2019 they they tell a story and it was initially based on the 1959 Sleeping Beauty the animated uh Sleeping Beauty and they bring a very interesting narrative that I find it quite appropriate to our conversation today so can we perhaps talk about the idea the concept of evil and how is it expressed for example when we discuss uh inner conflicts okay of course hello everyone so it's a pleasure to be here with you again and my friends Mars and Jada and this wonderful movie that it's uh really uh very very uh very important today because Joanna jel says that we are in a crisis we are in a crisis existential crisis in her wonderful book um in search for the truth uh she talks about uh about that I think it's chapter two if people want to read when they are able to and the the really important thing that I think it's so wonderful and you said this I I seen the first movie then I will need help from you guys I haven't seen the second and um and it's really interesting the title of the second is a Maleficent the queen of Evo what's the name yeah the Mistress of evil Mistress of evil yes and it reminds me of um and it's a tip if people want to watch I think in the YouTube has the whole interview but you guys can put in the YouTube or in the Google um um it's the face to face the interview with Carl Gustav Jung when he was quite old I think two or three years previously uh to his death and Morgan Freeman not the actor the journalist uh from BBC see ask asks him what's the

the interview with Carl Gustav Jung when he was quite old I think two or three years previously uh to his death and Morgan Freeman not the actor the journalist uh from BBC see ask asks him what's the origin of evil and he says the origin of all coming evil this was in 1950 late early I think 1960s uh he said the origin of all coming evil is man himself that we are the origin of all evil and that uh we know uh far too little about ourselves that we have to learn more about ourselves so I think this is a a a wonderful choice of movie talk about maleon because what's evil because we are we we know that all of us have light and darkness if we want to compare uh we can you know do an analogy of Good and Evil with light and darkness for instance because uh the evil feelings everything jealousy Envy hatred uh all these kind types of um of uh feelings if we are when we acknowledge them we are when we are feeling this emotions and feelings uh we feel evil ourselves don't we right uh if we analyze because of course the ego we will defend itself our Consciousness will defend itself of nobody wants to feel evil right but of course if we pay attention and we look within we are when we are feeling this type of emotions of feelings we we are not feeling very nice right we are not feeling peaceful oh I love myself so much no I'm feeling bad I know that I'm feeling bad I know that I'm not comfortable with myself something is happening within myself and of course the ego automatically will defend itself against this kind of um you know sadness this kind of um realization that I'm not all light and good so the struggle between good and evil is starts with the ourselves as Jun says and as Joanna the angelist says uh because in this book in search of for the truth look what she says she says the lack of identification between the ego our Consciousness the center of our Consciousness and the self our higher self that Jah says that is our spirit produces a lack of discernment regarding

says the lack of identification between the ego our Consciousness the center of our Consciousness and the self our higher self that Jah says that is our spirit produces a lack of discernment regarding existence and how to proceed giving rise to the domination of the shadow in all behaviors so I would say that uh ego is pretty much connected with the concept the yung's concept of the Shadow because the ego uh feels like uh you know um evil anything that threatens the my social mask the way that I want people to look at myself and actually the way that I feel it's okay for me to behave to feel then it's light then it's okay then the ego will not try to protect itself but as soon as some feeling some emotion comes that I know where do I know why do why does Joanna say the lack of identif ification between the ego not a fusion okay people but identification the lack of this conversation this opening of the ego to the knowledge of the self because our higher self as Jonah says being our spirit our Immortal Spirit has already have a lot of experiences and knows what it's right or wrong and it's here to learn better okay and it's here to real this this spiritual values and moral values to you know to like to um have some Roots deep roots in our souls so then we know that okay now the light is shining bright within myself but for that I have to acknowledge what it's still a shadow in myself I have to to have this um acceptance of my sh Shadow to embrace it not in the sense to submit to it but to work with it you know uh um it's like the shadow is like a child wanting for attention look at me look at me you know work with me tell me what I have to do and then the ego says no I don't want to know anything about that I'm not that so I'm not accepting myself so evil has much to do in psychological terms okay with Shadow but I want to hear Jada and I know Mara are going to ask uh because you guys have seen the movie quite recently can you connect to what we have seen in the movie yeah let me let me try

kay with Shadow but I want to hear Jada and I know Mara are going to ask uh because you guys have seen the movie quite recently can you connect to what we have seen in the movie yeah let me let me try before Jada comes in because um um I find it quite interesting right uh uh J that U we we we see in the movie that and this is really very uh very o uh very high level discussion of the movie but Maleficent uh she uh upon being not being invited actually to the beginning of the baptism or whatever the ceremony for the child Aurora and uh she she curses the child right and and we we keep thinking that uh the idea that she's she's really cursing herself it's her projection the the um hurt inner child that Aurora represents right but throughout the the the first movie especially she comes into contact because Aurora in order to the king and the queen in order to uh protect the child they they hid the child but uh Maleficent becomes the pseudo mother she takes care of the child and she sees herself in in the child and when uh she becomes an adolescent all of a sudden Maleficent understands that uh all that's going on and changes her mind about the curse right right so from that perspective I'd love to hear from you Jara if you could perhaps talk a little bit about uh root cause of all suffering that we have in us right can we talk perhaps uh uh those inner conflicts and maybe even discuss from a spiritual perspective what do you see in that narrative in the plot of the story okay so first of all hello hell an hello Mercia hello everyone it's so great to uh to have be having this discussion today and being able to analyze through let's call it modern mythology right yes the symbolism is that we can we can extract from you know a Disney movie which is which is absolutely great and and I think that I mean every for everyone that really can open their minds to it uh you will find great things to you know to think about to reflect and that's the reason why in this process in this journey of inner

I mean every for everyone that really can open their minds to it uh you will find great things to you know to think about to reflect and that's the reason why in this process in this journey of inner transformation of you know psychology and spirituality based on the works of Shan deangeles we have chosen to bring this topic today and uh for starter following what um Anna was talking about uh it's uh like she emphasize that it's not about being um uh you know to try to De deceive us to live in hypocrisy it's about you know knowing that we have our weaknesses right our flaws and um not giving ourselves up to it I was remembering about one thing that dealo Franco uh once was telling in one of his talks uh when he ask it uh the benefactor Joan deangeles about how what would be the best way for us to remove an evil thought and her answer was to substitute it with a good one so we cannot just push it away it's like anay was saying I cannot just uh expect that my ego alone is going to solve the ego problem I have to be mature and so when we talk about like you asked Mercia about the root of evil is exactly what we see in this movie as soon as she was hurt and she was really genuinely hurt writing her dreams of Youth the laws of Innocence um she could have chosen between two paths which was you know to really take the path of evilness and revenge and everything which is what she decided to do or she could have surrendered just to The Facts of Life overcome the situation and just go on and living living life so what is the root them is our choices so we are always in control and this is what sometimes really hurts when we have to hear it because then again I cannot blame in this case I mean she cannot blames uh you know the prince the the the king that was the one that you know because of his his ambition betrayed her all the evil and the the cage that she put herself and actually he he puts himself in the same condition later on it's because of her choice because she decided that that fact alone would

betrayed her all the evil and the the cage that she put herself and actually he he puts himself in the same condition later on it's because of her choice because she decided that that fact alone would determine the rest of her lives and her behavior and how she felt about life overlooking all the beauty that was surrounding her all the friendship that she had there and she just focused on that one thing that yes we have to admit was really really painful really hard but I I I I think it's a a very good uh way of asking ourselves as well a good opportunity for us to ask ourselves what am I doing in relation to what is happening to me now yes and how am I reacting in relation to all that yeah I I I find it fascinating just for um the idea that uh and I think it's for you na but for all of you who have not uh watched either movie but Jada can you give us the Arc of the story to everybody because I think the end is quite beautiful so uh we have h two movies right in the first one like we could see in the the the movie from 1958 right and the Sleeping Beauty we have this situation where we have but but it doesn't show in in this movie only in the the the the 2014 version right that she she lived in a region where there were fairies and life was a beauty and I mean from an ecological perspective it's absolutely Paradise it's like we are talking about the Garden of Eden yes so she is in the Garden of Eden and then all of a sudden there is a snake that infiltrate which is the human can can further this psychological aspect even more and she she makes friends with a human boy and of course they become very closed and they er they fall for each other but then he was since he was uh very young he told her that he came from a very um difficult background his family was very poor and his dream was to live in a castle and later on he found himself in a position uh that he could have his dream um accomplished by simply betraying by simply in his way of thinking betraying his friends which was

was to live in a castle and later on he found himself in a position uh that he could have his dream um accomplished by simply betraying by simply in his way of thinking betraying his friends which was Maleficent and he he decid decides that he is going to eliminate her to be uh so that he could receive the favors of the king and even of course of course as all those stories have received the hand of the beautiful pr princess uh and be the Future King so that's what he does and he he chops her wings which is you know the source of her life of her freedom of her her power yeah and um and I mean when she felt uh this uh betrayal uh that like we were talking about before uh it was when you know she she completely loses herself and we can see that the whole environment and everyone that was around her uh was affected by it and then when she hears the news of the christening of the child of the king the daughter of the king so she rushed she still ite and she curses the child thinking that that would really you know be a very good Revenge considering everything that she has lost but um as times goes by she has a situation where she will be capable of following the child um uh growth closely and of course she becomes very attached to the child to Aurora to Princess Aurora and the longer she she go stays there the more she she helps in her development development without her Maleficent realizes she becomes even more attached to the point where she's almost 16 years old when the curse was going to take place and she decides to remove the curse but only to find out that a curse cannot be broken not even by the one that has uttered the the words it's very much like you know our thoughts our words once they spread out in the world yes we can not pick them back you know there's no way we can you know bring this back that's why we have to be very care careful with words with writing and everything else and so you know this is when everything is going to be revealed the the the young lady finds

know bring this back that's why we have to be very care careful with words with writing and everything else and so you know this is when everything is going to be revealed the the the young lady finds out about the one that she called God mother and um and this is the whole situation where of course the curse takes place and um it's not news I'm not giving a spoiler but we know how this goes you know only two kids can wake up the princess and um a a a kiss with true love true love yes exactly I'm not going to tell you I think because I mean uh for those who have not watched the movie that was the the part of the movie that gave me impacted mostly uh I mean I thought it was so beautiful but then you know the the curse is removed but there is always another evil lurking around and then there is the second movie which is great as well and uh I don't know you want me to tell everything or sh I just wanted to give the final final at the very end of the second because that message yeah realized that uh she has all the appearance of evil and uh I mean we can see it even physically according to our standards right but there was a queen uh and her son was in love with Aurora and she didn't want peace between the two kingdoms so she goes uh like crazy to really make it uh possible for a war for an attack to happen and uh at this point uh we find out that um she's the one behind everything and like I was uh talking before with Anna Marcia uh looks can be deceiving because the queen is all you know the standard Beauty that we have uh and all dressed in white and polite with you know the right gestures and words but actually in her inner self she was really evil and um when she finds the occasion of hurting uh Maleficent which is by killing Aurora M jumps in from of Aurora and she is the one that wind up dissolving in ashes but there was a legend that among their people there was one there was a phoenix and it was when um after a little while she is reborn From the Ashes and it's a beautiful scene

up dissolving in ashes but there was a legend that among their people there was one there was a phoenix and it was when um after a little while she is reborn From the Ashes and it's a beautiful scene because all the symbolism of the the f and the uh and and you know how her people and everyone else would see a and the way I interpret it is like you know she she made the ultimate sacrifice she decided to let herself or the ego be killed and all the hurt and all the resentment and the Betrayal and the choices all of it evaporate right and then she Rises up yeah and you know even more powerful and beautiful and than than before but because she she she made the ultimate sacrifice and I think and I can can talk so much and some of the things here right and a and j it it's all about choices right so that's one theme it's about uh I think uh archetypes evil good Etc it is also about love and how love really overcomes everything so and I what are your thoughts how do we handle all of those conflicts and most important importantly our wounded inner child how what what what are your thoughts what can you tell uh everyone who's here with us today about this this topic so I'm looking at another of Joanna's beautiful sentence um because we are talking about crisis Maleficent you know she she was of course in a crisis from the beginning yeah and she goes through this you you guys talked about the archetypes so ancient forms that are within all of us in the collective unconscious the transpersonal dimension of the psych as we say because it's transpersonal it's beyond the personal and it's our common Heritage right so death and rebirth the Phoenix the archetypes of death and rebirth that are in our Collective and conscious because even if I I am a materialistic person for inance that in this personality I don't believe in this and that or spirituality or but the the problem for this this type of person um or actually the the a the way out is that all of us have a higher self even

in this personality I don't believe in this and that or spirituality or but the the problem for this this type of person um or actually the the a the way out is that all of us have a higher self even if we don't acknowledge this higher self and this higher selford according to Joanna is our Immortal spirit so my spirit knows my ego maybe doesn't know actually usually doesn't know it's all the process of individuation that we have talked about in other of our podcasts but so this development this reconnection and this manifestation of our Unity our uh you know our soul our soul Mission let's say that the spirit is knowledge brings so well um uh you know for our days so the thing is that if I um disconnect with my higher self as we were talking uh so I I kind of get lost and I live in the self in the self um sorry in the ego and in the complex as you said Mara the inner child for we all have uh traumatic um memories as Freud has already you know studied a a lot and opened this door for us so the feeling of hurt of not belonging of betrayal like brings Darkness to our souls if we connected to you know to this feelings and to this uh hurt and if we get stuck as Maleficent got stuck in the hurt of betrayal of not belonging of not being loved is AR typo why let's just think of what because we are all true children of God right so um and we yearn to go uh you know back in a sense because it's just the ego thinking but we are having this experience of learning and the ego feels disconnected to the source but the self know that it's not disconnected because the self as Jonah says is our Immortal spirit so the spirit is always in connection to the source to to God and why I I wanted to tell you this because we can't think of Maleficent in a sense of um hatred betrayal and her complexes and her inner child the hurt of being alone she's an orphan even if it's she is in Paradise maybe she's not connected to the hurt of being an orphan uh you know and of course she has all the Beautiful

and her inner child the hurt of being alone she's an orphan even if it's she is in Paradise maybe she's not connected to the hurt of being an orphan uh you know and of course she has all the Beautiful Creatures of nature that are the her uh friends but because of this story and we are doing a dip psychological reading of the story I guess that she was very hurting sight of the lack of uh you know father and mother why do we know that because she projected the bad um she turned into the the bad mother the the witch for instance the Fairy Godmother and the witch are opposites of the same archetype of the mother right everybody has a mother even if the we don't get to know our mothers for instance in this if I'm an orphan for instance but myself knows because as Immortal Spirits I have had so many mothers and fathers in all right in a lot of incarnations so if I'm connected to this inner knowledge that the self has I'm not going to be maybe I feel lonely in this life but I'm not going to to be lost or disconnected uh from love because I know I have a lot of people that love me even if I cannot uh and have mothered me other times and that I myself have been a mother to so many people look at beautiful it is but my left s at that point she was young I think I gather she had this all this hurt that it's hidden so that was a complex like the hurt of the inner child but and then she turns to the the bad mother who abandoned her because okay Aurora was a oh how cute a baby who can hurt a baby right as you said Mara if I project my hurt yes and my Envy because she was um the Aurora had a mother and father she so she was envying Aurora right the the the child child who had a mother and father who was loved who was cherished right and so then we can think that this inner child was hurt because was not feeling loved was feeling left alone and the guy later on betrays her again so I'm not not loved again so all this hurt comes but look what what wonderful where was the light of the inner child because we are

loved was feeling left alone and the guy later on betrays her again so I'm not not loved again so all this hurt comes but look what what wonderful where was the light of the inner child because we are talking about the hurt of the inner child but so the shadow inner child as a shadow that gets you know repressed denied and then I project of course but the the core of the of any complex of ours any any difficult aspect within our personal unconscious is an archetype and what is the the archetype of the inner child is the divine child who comes to your mind my friends Jesus the baby Jesus right yes so the divine child is within all of us the divine child child connects us with all why does Jesus said let the children come to me right because all this Joy of being discovering things all this creativity all innocence right innocence right is in the Divine Child all the potential to good to light Jesus can comes to you know to teach us the way to love to light to peace so all of this uh we can find uh dorant let's say in the complex in the core of the complex so when mfon is cursing the beautiful baby that she's anything of course right she's cursing herself because the projection is part of ourselves so then she becomes because mother and baby are parts of this um archetype there is no children without the mother no mother without a child right M so it's uh if I get to the to the dark side of the all the archetypes by the way have a dark and light because we are still in The Duality okay one day we are going to evolve to a nondo n Duo uh we are ascending and to a n Duo world but now we are learning so we have to how do we know what's like because we know we learn what's darkness so all this process we could say it's a process of uh growth of Maleficent and everybody involved because don't forget we are all interconnected so uh just as Jetta said oh the beautiful queen the white this and that had an evil part that it's was in her Shadow what's was what was in malef in Shadow the light CU she been

are all interconnected so uh just as Jetta said oh the beautiful queen the white this and that had an evil part that it's was in her Shadow what's was what was in malef in Shadow the light CU she been light she had light so the shadow can also um hold light aspects of ourselves that the ego at that point is not able to connect so I think it's it's beautiful because it also opens our minds this kind of story to not be stuck oh this is that and that is that no we are we can um like the the Phoenix aspect that it's also an AR archetyp sometimes things inside of us have to die to um have a rebirth right and uh to to let's say we we need to give birth to the light inside of us but to do that some aspect have to die but not to die like disappear deny or repress to die in ter in terms of transformation and Maleficent goes through this path of transformation and just to to stop here but just with a beautiful sentence of Joanna byel that is exactly this point that the crisis that we are living in learning how to accept what it's our shadows because to integrate as Malon had to do she sacrificed herself because of love right um toward Aurora she learned how to love the child the beautiful child she learned how to take care of the child she took care remember from the first movie of aora right she the the light of the mother uh overcame the darkness the envy that the mother sometimes can can be envious also because it's human nature so she goes through all this transformation and she sacrific herself that's true love as we say right that's the light so Janna says this individual and collective experience right of going through this crisis of looking um towards what's is still shadowing in US integrating working on it accepting because we cannot work uh what we don't accept is indispensable she says uh to the maturation and evolution of human beings who have moved away from themselves seeking outside the joy that can only be found within each one no one can provide us with the real happiness and

uh to the maturation and evolution of human beings who have moved away from themselves seeking outside the joy that can only be found within each one no one can provide us with the real happiness and well-being because these emotions are independent of external circumstances although many think otherwise says Jo and I think this beautiful story is telling us exactly that right yeah that's uh that's quite important for us and uh I wanted to uh ask Jad if you have any any questions or any additional feedback to to what we're talking here but uh one thing that came to my mind was the fact that as you mentioned both of you that something had to die in the figure of in this narrative the figure of malefic and I I love to all of us to remember that the term to sacrifice right to give up is really to turn sacred to to turn Divine to turn Godlike so I think it's awesome when we think about if we start a a moment of reflection what does it all tell us the story which is let's look into all of and let's see is is it me as the the hurt inner child or is it the the divine child as as you mentioned anay which one and how can I sacrifice therefore become sacred Within Me is am I sacrifice the hurt am I sacrifice my desire for Revenge to counter attack or it what what is it so I think it's a good foood for thought for all of us just what are your thoughts I just think that uh what I mentioned you know this uh citation from for from Joanna deangel it's so important because we keep on expecting the world to solve our problems everyone else you know the situations but uh but it's everything is up to us it's us it's h this uh search for inner balance and uh like we said at the beginning you know uh how important it is for us to be very mindful uh when we are choosing our reactions sometimes I cannot uh uh prevent the actions that the world is going to be throwing at me but my reaction I have to have control of it I have have to to know um how important it is for me to uh to keep the balance and not letting all

the actions that the world is going to be throwing at me but my reaction I have to have control of it I have have to to know um how important it is for me to uh to keep the balance and not letting all of those things affect me in a way that can take me into a path that uh is going to lead to disappointments to frustration and me make it even harder for me to go and dig out this light that inhabit that wellwells within so I I think was just great that Jan angelist bring us reminds us of that it's up to us and at the same way that I bring happiness to myself you know the happiness that we have irradiates and can make difference uh and can be that spark that is going to inspire others to attract the same way love it no love it an any final words before we close today yes I I just wanted to say I agree totally agree with j and you guys that we have the power to choose we are the captains of our own ships right we have the power to to choose our reality uh we have to face our truths and we can choose light over darkness and fear for instance and we can choose positivity over negativity and we should do that and to end uh just another s beautiful beautiful sentence by Jonah J look what she says joy is the presence of God in the heart of human beings singing without words Melodies of perality even if still for brief periods let's make long periods of time that's now love it love it that parting words but with that I want to say thank you thank everyone for being with us today and uh discussing this very interest interesting topic it's difficult sometimes but we can break it down and and see so much Beauty in in in narratives about conflicts about evil concepts of evil and and even archetypical ideas and images that we carry that may carry from Millennia right the idea of what is Maleficent what is a winged figure with horns but is it me projecting my own ideas of that but with that thank you thank you everyone and I'll see you next time bye everyone byebye
