His interpretation of the Tree of Knowledge can be understood symbolically: the emergence of consciousness brings humanity out of unconscious instinct and into self-awareness, choice, responsibility, and moral conflict. The “fruit” is therefore both a gift and a burden—the beginning of humanity's journey toward individuation and the discovery of the Self. • Erich Neumann Erich Neumann (1905–1960), a German-Israeli psychologist and student of Carl Jung, explored the development of consciousness through mythology in his landmark work The Origins and History of Consciousness. He argued that creation myths symbolically portray the psychological evolution from an original state of unconscious wholeness toward the emergence of the individual ego. • Imago Dei In Genesis, Imago Dei refers to humanity being created in the “image and likeness of God.” In a Psychology & Spirituality framework, it can symbolize the idea that human beings possess a transcendent dimension that cannot be reduced to biology or ego.
